Shelter is of great importance to each and everyone of us throughout the world. This is of utmost priority to the aged who have rendered service to their family and society when they were young.
But, in the feeble age, they need to lean on others or get themselves institutionalized either due to their disability, illness or sometimes as a consequence of the unconcerned attitude of their own near and dear ones.
In the contemporary sociological set up, institutions providing homely care and other facilities have become inevitable to such elderly people.
Responding to this particular need of the aged, 'Chiranthana Home For Geriatric Health Care' was setup to keep such elderly people happy and healthy in a homely atmosphere.
The beginning of an endless journey . . . .
It all started in the year 1998, a young man - Bharavi Deraje with the help of his friends, Shivanand Rai, Ishwar Kumar and Shankar Junior joined together and established Chiranthana Charitable Trust (R) and started a Home for Aged and Disabled in a small rented house in Bikarnakatte, Mangalore.
In the year 2000, the 'Home' shifted to twin premises in Kulashekar.
The trust was joined later by four more like-minded trustees - Dr. Savithri Daithota, Deepa Rose, Sowmyalakshmi Bhat and Smt. C. Sarojini.
It is a trust with a team consisting of artists, accountants, lawyers, doctors and social workers as advisors and resource persons.
It was in the year 2003, that Chiranthana shifted its Home for Aged and Disabled to a better premises - "Palimar House" Opp. Shubhagiri Hall in Surathkal. The new premises - a residential flat with 6 apartments was handed over to Chiranthana at a very nominal monthly rent.
Kind donors Sri Vadheesh Rao (USA) and brothers had come forward and donated a piece of land (15 cents) for the new building of Chiranthana built in memory of their parents Varija & Rama Rao. Thus, the name of the campus - “Varija Rama Rao Sevashrama”.
It was on this land, with the support of kind hearted donors, Chiranthana constructed its "Home for Geriatric Care"
